چکیده
In addition, in Table1, the estimates and standard errors for analyses 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 should be multiplied by 0.467, 0.937, 0.120, 0.467 and 0.467, respectively. These errors resulted from the incorrect calculation of the volumes of the song-control nuclei. Because the same calculation error was made for every measurement, regardless of experimental treatment, none of these corrections affect the z-scores or P values, and, therefore, this correction does not influence any of the publication’s results or conclusions. The authors apologize for any inconvenience caused by these errors. HVC RA lMAN Area X 0 1 2 3 4 5

Song competition changes the brain and behavior of a male songbird.
Males should adjust their behavior and its neural substrates according to the quality of competition that they assess by eavesdropping on other males' courtship signals. In European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), females base mate choice, in part, on aspects of male song associated with its length, which positively correlates with the males' reproductive success, immunocompetence, age and abilit...
متن کاملStructural changes between seasons in the songbird auditory forebrain.
The song control system (SCS) of seasonal songbirds shows remarkable seasonal plasticity. Male starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) sing throughout the year, but in the breeding season, when concentrations of testosterone are elevated, the song is highly sexually motivated. The main goal of this study was to investigate structural seasonal changes in regions involved in auditory processing and in socio...
متن کاملNeuroendocrinology of song behavior and avian brain plasticity: multiple sites of action of sex steroid hormones.
Seasonal changes in the brain of songbirds are one of the most dramatic examples of naturally occurring neuroplasticity that have been described in any vertebrate species. In males of temperate-zone songbird species, the volumes of several telencephalic nuclei that control song behavior are significantly larger in the spring than in the fall. These increases in volume are correlated with high r...
متن کامل3b-HSD activates DHEA in the songbird brain
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is an abundant circulating prohormone in humans, with a variety of reported actions on central and peripheral tissues. Despite its abundance, the functions of DHEA are relatively unknown because common animal models (laboratory rats and mice) have very low DHEA levels in the blood. Over the past decade, we have obtained considerable evidence from avian studies demo...
متن کاملSeasonal changes in testosterone, neural attributes of song control nuclei, and song structure in wild songbirds.
Seasonal changes in the neural attributes of brain nuclei that control song in songbirds are among the most pronounced examples of naturally occurring plasticity in the adult brain of any vertebrate. The behavioral correlates of this seasonal neural plasticity have not been well characterized, particularly in songbird species that lack adult song learning. To address this question, we investiga...
